DIY Pillowcase with Overlapping Sequins [Sewing Tutorial]

I think that I’ve officially become a pillowcase hoarder collector now. I’m cool with it, though – if it means my couch can always be this cute. Sequins are such a great way to add some fun to anything!

I always wondered how to sew sequins onto fabric, but in all the sequin tutorials I looked up people just glued the sequins on. I don’t know how that holds up over time, but I opted to learn to sew them on and share it with you!

After finishing these pillowcases, I realized that there are a lot of different ways you can sew sequins on. So here is just one of the ways!

Materials you will need:
  • embroidery ring
  • fabric the size of the front of your pillow (+ seam allowance)
  • sequins
  • sewing needle
  • matching thread
  • pen or thin marker

1. Practice drawing what you will put on your pillow to get it the way you want it. With a pen or thin marker, draw it on your pillow so that it’s visible enough for you to see. Secure your fabric in your embroidery ring.

2. Tie a knot in the end of your thread, and thread it through your needle. Start by sticking your needle up through the first part of your word and add a sequin so that it is facing up like a bowl shape. Thread all the way through.

3. Go back down through your fabric on the outer edge of the sequin, following the drawn line.

4. Come up through the fabric about a half sequins width, following the drawn line.

5. Add sequin and repeat steps 2-4.

This is what it should start to look like after a few sequins. If you have overlapping lines like mine, or a different starting point, you can cut the thread and start in a different spot, or you can go down on the outer edge of the sequin like normal and go up through the fabric where you want the next sequin.

This is what it should look like when you’re done! Such a fun way to add some sparkle to a room, right? I sequinned the fabric before making it into a pillowcase to make it easier. If you want to make a pillow cover like this one, I showed how to make these envelope pillowcases in this tutorial.
