Hinterland Dress + Sew-Off Announcement!

Hinterland Dress by Sew Liberated Hinterland Dress by Sew Liberated

I am so excited to share what Sara from The Sara Project and I have been working on for the last few months! We are hosting a Hinterland Sew-Off! We wanted to team up and do something fun that would include the sewing community and get everyone excited to make a pattern together. The Hinterland Dress by Sew Liberated was the perfect pattern for just that. The Hinterland is a recently release pattern, and it has been VERY popular, but I am still surprised at the amount of people who haven’t heard of it yet!

After we chose the Hinterland as the pattern we wanted to use, I went straight to Pinterest (anyone else do that?). Basically 1/3 of the things I had pinned in my Wardrobe Inspiration Board could easily be recreated with the Hinterland pattern. I created a separate board for my Hinterland Inspiration, so here is the link to help you start brainstorming your own Hinterland!

The rules and information are down below, but I wanted to share my experience making the dress too. You can check out Sara’s Hinterland on her blog too!

This was my very first time making a Sew Liberated pattern, and it definitely won’t be my last! The Hinterland pattern is organized and easy to follow. I especially love the illustrations! It looks like Meg’s Illustrator draws and scans all of the illustrations so that they stay looking very natural and easy to understand what they are showing.

I would definitely recommend this pattern to a confident beginner. The front placket is the only thing that would be new to a beginner, but it’s not scary at all. Just take your time, and you can do it! I am always so grateful that my sewing machine handles button holes like a champ and I didn’t have a single frustration while working with the buttons.

I was a little surprised that there wasn’t a button hole guide included, but Meg explains the best way to mark the button placement and that was helpful. I actually used another pattern’s button placket as a little bit of a guide, but then had to space them a little bit closer together. I marked all of the button hole spots with my chalk liner and it worked great! I only had 11 of these Arrow Mountain buttons and when I got done with the button holes, I realized I hadn’t counted the button holes!! But don’t worry. I had added exactly 11, which the pattern suggests for the midi length. (*HUGE sigh of relief*)

And while we’re on the subject, aren’t these buttons gorgeous!? These are The Shirt Button (four hole) from Arrow Mountain. They are the most gorgeous buttons! Even though they ship from Australia, they were here (California) in less than 2 weeks! I have been eyeing The Asterisk Buttons too. Aren’t they the coolest?!

I would be doing you a HUGE disservice to not tell you about this fabric because it is seriously AMAZING! While I was wearing it, I realized that it’s the same type of fabric I made my Kalle Shirt out of; rayon/linen! I LOVE rayon linen. If I could have a whole wardrobe made of it, I would be totally happy. This fabric is Linen & Viscose Slub from Blackbird Fabrics. I made mine in the color black because I really wanted a nice woven black dress, but they have so many other colors! If you haven’t worked with this type of fabric before, you really need to. It is the perfect marriage of the two fibers. It’s a little bit heavier than rayon challis, more opaque, and more tightly woven. It is a lot like linen, but has a better drape and softer hand. It also doesn’t wrinkle as much, which I really love.

My sewing tall adjustments were to cut above the bust dart and lower it by 1.5″, which was perfect for me. I didn’t muslin, but I did try the pattern piece up to my body to decide how much I needed to lower the apex. I also lengthened the skirt by 4″, and made sure to lengthen the placket pieces by (the total) 5.5″.

We hope you all love the Hinterland Dress pattern as much as we do, and we are SO excited to see your creations!! Take a few minutes to skim through the information for the Sew-Off and don’t forget about the promo codes when you’re searching for all of the right materials to make your own! Good luck and happy sewing!

What if I make more than one Hinterland?
We are so glad you love the pattern as much as we do! Each Hinterland Dress you decide to make and post a photo of counts as one entry.

Do I have to sew the Hinterland Dress?
We’re not stopping anyone’s creativity and love to see you inspire others! This is a sew-off for the Hinterland, so it needs to be recognizable as the Hinterland Dress pattern. As long as your creation still looks like you used the Hinterland as a base, it will count. You are more than welcome to hack it!

What if I don’t have Instagram?
We invite any and all to participate in the Sew-Off, but if you would like to be entered to win any of the prizes, you do need to have an Instagram. Come on over and join in!

What if my account is private?
We completely understand the need for privacy. If your account is private, both judges will not be able to see your entry. To be entered you must have a public account between September 24 – October 22, 2018 (or whenever you decide to post your photo – until the end of the Sew-Off).

Why did you choose the Hinterland Dress pattern?
The Hinterland Dress pattern was recently released and it is a popular one in the sewing community. We both wanted to make the pattern and hadn’t yet, so we decided to make it a fun event for everyone to make and share theirs too!
